Earlier this week, in the midst of a global pandemic and only a few days past the big January 28th “Let’s Talk” event in support of mental health, Bell implemented another downsizing initiative impacting TEAM members. Up to 35 TEAM positions are targeted. Eight positions in IBEW and seven in Unifor are also targeted for elimination.
Although this is the eighth downsizing initiative targeting positions within our bargaining unit since Bell took over (the March 2020 VRTIP was ultimately cancelled), it does not make it any easier for members in targeted positions who wish to remain a part of the Bell team or for their colleagues who may be ‘safe’ this time around but are left wondering for how long. And given multiple reports from members of no shortages of work in many of the targeted areas it is difficult for some of us not to question the Company’s priorities and motives regarding the ongoing cycle of downsizing in Manitoba. The story was also picked up in yesterday’s Winnipeg Free Press.
We understand that members have received an email from Bell that includes a link to the voluntary departure package (EVRTIP); members on leave have been mailed a copy to their homes. The package contains a list of the targeted positions. Members who are not in one of the targeted positions may also apply for a departure package, however, the decision to approve or deny an application rests solely with the Company. The deadline to apply is 4:00 p.m. on March 2, 2021.
Knowing the number and location of EVRTIP applicants will assist TEAM in any discussions we may have with the Company around redeployments and saving someone from being laid off. We are therefore asking for your help in tracking and monitoring the progress of the voluntary departure program:
- Members in targeted positions: If you are in a targeted position, please click here and provide your name, position title, and if you intend to apply for the EVRTIP or not, or if you are currently undecided.
- Members not in targeted positions: If you are not in a targeted position, but intend to apply for the EVRTIP, please click here and provide your name, position title, and work group/area.
Should you wish to have a confidential discussion about your options, please email or call the TEAM office.
