Yesterday, Bell announced significant workforce reductions affecting approximately 4,800 positions, 9% of its workforce. These job cuts, according to Bell, will impact various divisions within the company, including some vacant positions that will remain unfilled. We do not yet have a clear picture of how Bell’s announcement will impact the TEAM membership; however, over the next coming days, we will continue to work to receive information from Bell about the reductions.
We are disappointed once again to learn about yet another wave of job cuts and layoffs, especially given the significant toll it takes on our workforce here in Manitoba and considering Bell’s decision at the same time to provide a 3.1% dividend increase to shareholders. The decision to eliminate these jobs, particularly in the midst of existing stress, unsustainable workloads, and limited career opportunities only exacerbates the challenges faced by our membership.
Bell’s justification for these cuts, citing a shift towards new growth areas and aligning costs to revenue potential, fails to acknowledge the human cost of such decisions. TEAM members have already endured years of cuts and restructuring since Bell’s acquisition of MTS, resulting in a nearly 40% reduction in membership. We see that this continuous erosion of jobs and resources has created a harmful work environment marked by insecurity and instability. TEAM has been working over the years to raise public awareness over this issue and commissioned a report last year titled: “For Whom the Bell Tolls: The Privatization of Manitoba Telecom Services and its Impacts.”
Moreover, the timing of these layoffs in relation to upcoming CRTC regulatory hearings raises serious questions about the company’s motives and intentions. It appears that Bell’s actions may be driven more by strategic considerations than by genuine concerns for its employees or adherence to regulatory obligations.
As a union, we will continue to advocate tirelessly for the rights and well-being of our members. We call on Bell Canada to prioritize the interests of its workforce and to engage constructively with regulators and stakeholders to find sustainable solutions that do not come at the expense of jobs and livelihoods.
TEAM is committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of our members during these challenging times. Please know that we are here to support you and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance navigating the impacts of these changes.
